‘Shivers of electricity’
Roald Dahl said that when he first read the newspaper article, it sent ‘shivers of electricity all the way down my legs to the soles of my feet’. He immediately travelled all the way from his home in Buckinghamshire to Mildenhall to find George Butcher, the ploughman who had by chance discovered the treasure. Roald Dahl persuaded George Butcher to tell him all the details, promising that he would tell a ‘truthful story’ about the find. Roald Dahl’s story was published in “The Saturday Evening Post” in America, under the title ‘He Plowed up $1,000,000’ before being republished in the Henry Sugar collection in 1977.
