Step behind the scenes

Our archive store houses one of the most complete literary archives in the country. From the first draft of Matilda to Roald’s childhood letters there are so many treasures to explore. Our VIP archive experiences takes you into this treasure-trove where you’ll see rare manuscripts, letters and objects that tell you the stories behind the stories.

Join us for a 30 minute whistle-stop tour through our top archive treasures. You’ll see extraordinary items that tell amazing stories about your favourite books, and learn some swashboggling stories behind the stories.

Great for young Roald Dahl fans who have read or enjoyed some of the author’s books. Especially brilliant for those who have got Roald Dahl projects at school and want to amaze their teachers and friends!

We recommend this tour for families and groups with children aged 8 and up, or for groups of adults.

This hour long deeper dive into the Roald Dahl archive lets you get up-close to some amazing objects, manuscripts and letters.

You’ll discover some fascinating stories about Roald Dahl, the inspiration for his stories and his creative process. As you go you can ask all your burning questions to our resident expert.

Great for fans of Roald Dahl and his stories, as well as people who’d like to tap into Roald’s creative process for some inspiration. This is a truly unique opportunity to go behind the scenes and experience some items not usually on display to the public.

Explore the village and countryside

If getting some fresh air is more your thing then why not book an exclusive VIP guided walk for your group. Our trails let you explore the streets and sights that inspired Roald Dahl and let you walk the very paths he walked on.

Great for families or groups of adult superfans, there’ll be a big helping of readings from the books thrown in so you can really step into the stories.

Get out of the Museum with a VIP guided tour of the village of Great Missenden.

So many of the stories were inspired by sights around the village. Your guide will point out places such as Matilda’s Library and Danny’s petrol pumps.

You’ll learn fascinating facts as well as listening to readings from the books along the way.

A great, active way to experience some of the secrets of the stories for those who like to stretch their legs and get a bit of fresh air!

We recommend this walk for families and groups with children aged 6 and up, or for groups of adults.

£85 for up to 12 people, in addition to Museum entry

The walk lasts 45 minutes to an hour, along level pavements that might be narrow in places. Please wear appropriate footwear.

Head off into Roald Dahl country with this walk into the local woods.

Angling Spring wood is said to be the inspiration for Fantastic Mr Fox, Danny the Champion of the World and Billy and the Minpns. This walk will lead you off the beaten path, across a meadow to the beautiful wood. Here you’ll learn about the stories set here and listen to extracts from the books.

Roald Dahl used to visit this wood, so you’ll also be following in the author’s footsteps. This promises to be an inspirational walk in nature that great for both family groups and adult groups.

The walk lasts around an hour, along paths that may be steep and muddy in places. Not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs. Please wear appropriate footwear.

Great! When can we visit?

Our VIP experiences take place when the Museum is open for visitors which is usually Thursday to Sunday in term-time plus extra days in the school holidays.  They don’t run on set dates or at set times, we organise them based in your requirements and our staff availability. Get in touch and we can start to organise your tailor-made visit.
