Plan your visit
SEND
We recognise that some families have additional needs and requirements when visiting.
We do our best to make sure that every visitor to the Museum has a brilliant time. On this page we’ve outlined some information that may prove useful when planning a visit.
SEND explorer bags and quiet space kit.
Explore your way! These kits are available for you to borrow for free from the ticket desk, subject to availability. Please return them at the end of your visit.
SEND explorer bags include sunglasses, ear defenders, baseball cap, Makaton cards, fidget toys, torch, magnifying glass, large photographs, Museum map, basic trail and emotions card.
Quiet space kit includes a pop-up tent, weighted blanket, ear defenders, Museum map and emotions card.
Quieter times
If you are looking for a quieter time to visit the Museum the best times to come are:
- After 2.30pm on Thursdays and Fridays during term-time. Our schools groups will have left for the day and the Museum is usually very quiet.
- After 2.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays during term-time – ie outside of school holidays. We find that our visitor numbers reduce over the course of the day.
Accessibility guide
You can take a look at our accessibility guide online on the Visit England Accessibility Guides website. This contains comprehensive information about a visit to the Museum.
You can see our full accessibility guide here, or download it from the links below.
Visual stories
We have two visual stories documents which can be downloaded from this page. They show you what to expect from a visit to the Museum, including lots of photos of the Museum spaces.
