Extra-special family day out from London
Monday 11 August

The Roald Dahl Museum is just a hop, skip and a jump from London via train
In just 45 minutes you’ll find yourself in the charming Chiltern Hills. Stop at Great Missenden station and you’ll be walking in the footsteps of the BFG, Fantastic Mr Fox and Matilda.
The Roald Dahl Museum
Based in the village that Roald lived and wrote in for over 30 years, this hands-on family-friendly museum is packed with interactive gallery spaces featuring the stories behind the stories, and is ideal for kids aged 5 to 12. Pull a power-pose with Matilda, peek into a film set from the 2009 Fantastic Mr Fox film, dress up as your favourite characters or just relax with a book.
You’ll find a craft room to keep you all busy packed with free drop-in activities based around the books, Museum trails to help you explore and family games to join in with.
Where the magic happened
The centrepiece of the Museum is Roald Dahl’s Writing Hut, preserved exactly how he left it. Peek inside and learn how Roald got inspiration for his stories. You can also see original manuscripts, ideas books and film props on display.

Great Missenden is picture-perfect village that’s ideal for a saunter. Pick up one of the Museum guided walk leaflets and explore for yourself. You can also enjoy two playgrounds and the Buryfield park (perfect for picnics in summer!) and lots of charming cafes, pubs and gift shops along the High Street. Take a stroll up to the 14th Century church of St Peter and St Paul to find Roald Dahl’s grave and the BFG footprints leading to it.
