A Big Happy Day Out at the Museum

Wednesday 12 August

Families across Buckinghamshire enjoyed a free day of creativity, storytelling and shared family fun at the Museum.

Every day at the Museum is fantastic, but for some families Friday 31 July was extra-special due to funding received from The Clare Foundation.

A Big Happy Day

On this day the Museum welcomed families who might otherwise have been unable to visit because of financial or practical barriers. They enjoyed a packed day of summer fun which included listening to the Museum’s storytellers, exploring the galleries and playing Roald Dahl garden games in the courtyard.

Families particularly enjoyed the storytelling, which was from Fantastic Mr Fox, as well as spending quality family time together.

The families were specially invited to the Museum. They were given lunch supplied by the Museum’s Filling-Station kiosk, and — recognising that the cost of travel can be equally a significant a barrier as the cost of admission — the Museum ensured that families could attend by providing free return coach travel by Masons Coach Hire.

“Stories have the power to inspire, build confidence and bring families together, and we believe every child should have the opportunity to experience that, regardless of their circumstances”

Emma Bedlow , Interim Director of the Roald Dahl Museum

The Big Happy Family Day Out forms part of the Museum’s wider work to widen access to creativity, culture and storytelling. Alongside programmes supporting SEND families, schools serving disadvantaged communities and outreach work beyond the Museum itself, the event reflects the charity’s commitment to ensuring that everyone can experience the joy and benefits of storytelling.

“At The Clare Foundation, we believe every child and every family should have the opportunity to experience the inspiration, imagination and joy that places like the Roald Dahl Museum offer. Too often, the cost of a day out or even getting there can put these experiences beyond reach. By working collaboratively with the Museum, our local charity partners and Opportunity Bucks we were able to remove those barriers and create a day that brought generations together to share stories, learn, laugh, and make lasting memories”
