Home Education Visits

We are excited to launch our new Big Friendly Home Education Days
The Roald Dahl Museum is a space for all and we understand the importance of providing alternative ways to access the Museum and its content for our visitors. If you home educate we’d be delighted to welcome you on one of our days set up just for you.
Our next Home Ed Days take place on:
- Tuesday 16 December
What happens on a Home Ed Day?
On these days the museum is open 10am to 2.30pm exclusively for home educated families and is closed to the general public. Visitor capacity on the day will also be significantly lower than when we are open to the public to ensure that everyone visiting is able to take part in all activities on offer.
The programme offers visitors the choice of facilitated workshops, storytelling, talks, gallery challenges and self-led exploration. It is designed to be a more flexible alternative to the school programme. The day is ideal for families who would like to be able to take part in a mixture of facilitated sessions and self-led exploration to explore the Museum, Roald’s stories and his life. The activities will be aimed at age 6 and above.
During your visit you will be able to:
- Take part in an interactive Sensory Storytelling session
- Delve into Roald Dahl’s writing process and explore your imagination using tips and techniques Roald used in his own writing
- Learn more about Roald and his life during one of our Writing Hut talks
- Explore the galleries and take part in a self-led galleries-challenge
- Spend the whole day with us and explore the local area by going on our self-led village or countryside trail
- Bring a picnic and use one of our picnic areas or courtyard to enjoy lunch
Session overviews
Be part of the adventure as we bring Roald’s stories to life in our Sensory Storytelling sessions. Sessions are led by our wonderful Learning Session Leaders and use visual prompts, objects, sound, movement and smells. The Learning Session Leader will encourage your group to take part in the storytelling by using the sensory elements as the action unfolds.
30 minutes
Free with admission
Suitable for all ages, children must be accompanied by an adult
Find yourself wondering how to get started with writing? This workshop will use techniques from Roald Dahl’s own writing process to generate plenty of material to help you get going. Get hands-on with activities that make use of archive materials and gobblefunk around with words. You’ll finish feeling ready to beat the blank page.
The session is fast-paced and interactive, using a range of materials from playdough to cellotape. Please note that this is not a workshop where children will write a text.
