Enjoy a magical day at the Museum packed with inspirational author sessions, fun-filled activities, interactive storytelling sessions and creative workshops — all tailored just for kids.
With appearances from beloved children’s authors and illustrators such as Sarah Mussi and Alan Durant, this event aims to ignite the imagination and nurture a love for reading and writing in children of all ages. Bring your little ones for a day of joy, creativity, and literary adventure.

Ticket prices include entry to the Museum and the festival activities onsite. Please note that on the booking pages this ticket is split into two parts: ‘Museum Admission’ and ‘Young Voices AIM Literary Festival’. The Museum shop will be stocking copies of the books featured in the festival, and there will be signing opportunities throughout the day.

There will be a host of FREE workshops running though the day. Book onto these in advance to secure your space. Please only book onto one workshop so as many people can benefit from these.
Poems and Tiny Tales with Alan Durant
11am to 11.45am
Step into the world of words with award-winning author Alan Durant, as he shares his love of poetry and very short stories in this lively and interactive workshop.
Children will discover how just a few carefully chosen words can spark big ideas, emotions, and laughter. Alan will read from his collection What I Did On My Holiday, show how rhythm, rhyme, and imagination bring poems to life, and guide participants in creating their own short pieces – from playful verses to marvellous mini-stories.
Perfect for children who enjoy reading, writing, or simply playing with words.

Write a Short Novella with Sarah Mussi
12pm to 12.45pm
Join award-winning author Sarah Mussi for a fast-paced and creative 45-minute workshop designed for children aged 9 to 12. In this session, Sarah will guide young writers through the exciting process of shaping their own short novella from sparking an idea to building characters and setting and giving their story a strong ending.
Packed with tips, fun exercises, and plenty of imagination, this workshop will help children discover the storyteller within and leave them with the confidence to keep writing long after the session ends.

Stories, Sports and Friendship with Dr Cheryl Diane Parkinson
1pm to 1.45pm
Join Dr Cheryl Diane Parkinson, author of the acclaimed children’s novel Last Girl In, for an interactive workshop that blends storytelling with teamwork and fun.
Aimed at children aged 9 to 12, this 45-minute session explores themes, including friendship, fairness, and finding the courage to be yourself. Through lively discussion and creative writing activities, children will imagine their own characters facing challenges on and off the sports field, and learn how to build stories that feel real, relatable, and full of heart.
With Cheryl’s guidance, participants will discover how everyday experiences whether on the playground, in a game, or among friends can inspire powerful stories.

Create Your Own Comic Book Page with Phil Littler
2pm to 2.45pm
Ever wanted to make your own comic? In this fun and interactive 45-minute workshop, illustrator Phil Littler will show children how to bring their stories to life, one panel at a time.
Through step-by-step guidance, Phil will help young creators design characters, add speech bubbles, create action with “pow!” and “whoosh!” sound effects, and build a mini comic page packed with personality. Children will leave with their own comic creation—and the confidence to keep telling stories through pictures and words.
Perfect for ages 7 to 11, this session combines drawing, imagination, and plenty of laughs!

Tell Your Story with Nicola Garrard
3pm to 3.45pm
Come and join author Nicola Garrard for a fun and inspiring writing workshop! Nicola, the author of the award-winning book 29 Locks, will show you how to create characters full of energy, write dramatic scenes, and turn your own ideas into gripping stories.
In just 45 minutes, you’ll play with words and discover how even a small spark of an idea can grow into something amazing. Nicola’s stories are all about courage, friendship, and finding your voice—and in this session, you’ll get the chance to share yours too.
Perfect for ages 11 to 14 who love stories or just want to give writing a go

Your ticket includes entry to the Museum and to the Young Voices Literary Festival.
There will be various author/illustrator workshops taking place on the day. These are free, but please book your spaces for these in advance to avoid disappointment.
Other drop-in activities will be happening throughout the Museum during the day, including creative activities and storytelling. These are included with your ticket and do not need booking.
The hands-on Museum galleries will also be open for you to enjoy and explore. Peek into Roald Dahl’s Writing Hut, explore items from the Museum archive and enjoy over 40 interactive exhibits.
We recommend booking in advance for this event, which you can do on our booking pages.
When adding tickets to your basket, you’ll need to add a Museum admission ticket and a Young Voices AIM Literary Festival ticket for each person in your group. This includes those eligible for free entry and for those with an annual return ticket. You’ll see the relevant options for these on the booking page.
Everyone who visits on Sunday 5 October will need a these two tickets for entry.
You’ll be given the option to book on to one of the free workshops running that day after you add your Museum and festival tickets to your basket. Please only book onto one workshop so ensure as many people as possible can enjoy them.
There may be tickets available to buy on the door, on the day but we can’t guarantee this will be the case.
There are various free author and illustrator workshops taking place throughout the day. You’ll find details of these above and you can book free spaces on these once you’ve added your Museum admission and festival tickets to your basket.
You’ll need to book a space for every member of your group attending the workshop, including adults. Under 16 will need to be accompanied by a grown-up aged 18 or over.
Please just book onto one of the workshops so enable as many people as possible to enjoy them.
Yes, if you have a current 12 month Museum admission ticket you can use this. Simply select the annual ticket holders option on the booking pages for your Museum admission. You’ll still need to pay for the Young Voices AIM Literary Festival ticket which costs £6.95 and covers the additional festival activities.
You’ll need to enter a valid reference from your previous booking to book these tickets.

About the festival
The AIM Literary Festival has been curated by the award-winning small press Author In Me Publishing, based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Author In Me was a regional finalist for Small Press of the Year by the British Book Awards in 2023 and 2024. To know more about the festival please visit www.aimlitfestival.com.
Their ‘Young Voices’ imprint specialises in transforming stories written by children into beautifully illustrated picture books. They also publish select works by young authors and nurture emerging talent through creative writing classes. The AIM Literary Festival for Children is an annual celebration dedicated to young authors, providing a platform to inspire children to embrace the power of storytelling. Through workshops, author talks, and opportunities for children to share their voices, the festival actively promotes reading and writing among the younger generation.
